The Old Shang was a real Dubuque bar at 1091 Main Street, listed in the Dubuque City Directory continuously from 1977 through 1993. Like many neighborhood taverns of its era, it issued its own trade tokens, wooden nickels, and matchbooks as house souvenirs and small-change novelties — the kind of local ephemera that collectors still trade today and that historians now rely on to document bars long since closed. Decades after last call, its name lives on mostly through those keepsakes and this throwback design.
