Pusateri's was a genuine Dubuque institution for more than 70 years. The Italian-American restaurant traces back to the mid-1950s, when it was founded by a member of the family that would run it for generations, and it built its name on classic Italian-American food and pizza served up at more than one address over the decades — Encyclopedia Dubuque records the restaurant operating on Main Street through the 1960s before later settling in at 2400 Central Avenue. After more than seven decades of feeding the city, staffing shortages finally forced Pusateri's to close its doors in September 2022. Reduced Saturday hours that August had already signaled trouble was coming, and the sign the owners posted on the door said it simply: "Thanks for 70+ years. Pusateri's will be closing due to staffing shortages." For a restaurant that outlasted generations of Dubuquers' pizza cravings, it was a quiet end to a very long run.
