Central Alternative opened in 1972 as Central Extension School, giving students who struggled in a traditional classroom another path to a diploma. It grew into a full four-year school by 1980 and later became an Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound School, sending students out to research the Tuskegee Airmen and local WWII veterans - a 2000 memorial book project alone raised about $6,000, more than any other school in Iowa. Budget cuts closed its doors for good in 2010 after 51 final graduates crossed the stage.
