The Chateau Supper Club Vintage 15oz. Ceramic Mug pays tribute to one of the Dubuque area’s most legendary supper clubs with a design available only at Dubuque Clothing, finished with high-quality, soft inks on a durable ceramic mug built to last.
The club got its start in 1937 when Anton “Tony” Van Driel opened Chateau Antone on Sageville Road just outside Dubuque’s city limits, deliberately beyond local law enforcement’s easy reach, serving beef and pork sandwiches, tap beer, and dancing. After changing hands a few times, Bob and Helen Timmerman bought it in 1944, renamed it simply “The Chateau,” and grew it into a family-style destination with banquet rooms by the early 1950s. Lloyd “Lefty” and Esther Dalsing took over in 1955 and ran it as an upscale supper club with live music for 35 years, rebuilding after major fires in 1962 and 1972, before the restaurant finally closed in 1992.
