Organized baseball in Dubuque got its start in the 1860s at League Park, near E. 32nd Street (Peru Road) and Central Avenue. The city's club later relocated closer to downtown, to a field at 24th and Jackson that served as home turf from 1895 through 1927 under a string of leagues -- the Eastern Iowa League, the Western Association, and the Triple-Eye League among them. In 1913, outfielder Larry LeJeune reportedly launched a ball clean over the grandstand and into a yard across the street, a 431-foot blast fans talked about for years.
On May 14, 1929, the Dubuque City Council settled on a name for the city's first professional baseball park: Comiskey Field, honoring legendary player and club owner Charles Comiskey. The name -- suggested by Albert V. Schiltz from more than sixty entries -- was dedicated a municipally-owned recreation center on June 20, 1929, complete with tennis courts, a shelter house, and an ice rink added by 1937.
