Dubuque's love of two wheels goes back to the bicycle craze of the 1890s. On March 17, 1892, twenty young men — enthusiastically dubbed riders of "straddling steeds of steel" by the local newspaper — founded the Dubuque Cycling Club, picking blue and old gold as their official colors. The club organized weekly summer group rides, joined the national League of American Wheelmen, and even hoped to bring the league's state meeting to Dubuque, part of a nationwide craze that turned cycling clubs into some of the era's most popular social and athletic organizations.
