Young sunflowers really do follow the sun across the sky, a trick called heliotropism — but UC Davis researchers discovered it's not the simple light-chasing mechanism found in most plants. Instead, the stem grows more on its east side during the day, pushing the flower head west, then grows more on the west side overnight to swing it back east by morning, all timed by the plant's own internal clock. Scientists were genuinely surprised to find this uses a totally different, still-unidentified pathway than ordinary plant light-sensing.
