Long before it became a nostalgic collector's item, a tin of pure lard was a kitchen staple stamped out by the Dubuque Packing Company, once one of the city's largest employers. Under president Harry Wahlert, who took over in 1931 during the depths of the Great Depression, "the Pack" grew rapidly and even produced canned hams that became the first American food product exported after World War II. By the 1960s the plant employed 3,500 workers, and its familiar packaging -- lard cans included -- ended up in kitchens across the country.
