Nothing says romance quite like a holiday that started out as an act of Church bureaucracy. Pope Gelasius I designated February 14th as St. Valentine's feast day all the way back in 496 AD, honoring a martyr whose actual life story has almost nothing to do with love or courtship — there were, in fact, multiple early Christian martyrs named Valentine, and their romantic associations are largely later invention. The holiday didn't pick up any romantic meaning for nearly 900 years, until the English poet Geoffrey Chaucer effectively invented the modern idea of Valentine's Day in his 1380s poem "Parliament of Fowls," linking the date to birds choosing their mates each spring. Many people also assume the holiday grew out of the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, held every February 15th, but historians now consider that connection a myth — the two events simply share a February timing, born from the same age-old instinct to celebrate the changing season, not any deliberate link between them.
