"Duber" is a local shorthand for Dubuque, and this throwback tee tips its cap to the city's deep brewing roots. In 1892, four rival local breweries — A. Heeb Brewing Company, Northern Brewing Company, Iowa Brewery, and Western Brewery — merged to form the Dubuque Brewing and Malting Company, largely because Iowa's strict prohibitory laws had made it nearly impossible to sell brewery property on its own. The combined company opened a massive new facility on May 7, 1896, covering ten acres and capable of producing 300,000 barrels a year, with a $50,000-$60,000 refrigeration plant that could turn out 200 tons of ice a day and did away with the old-fashioned beer cellar entirely. The brewery even ran some of the first electric delivery trucks in the state of Iowa, battery-powered machines that turned heads on Dubuque's streets. When statewide prohibition shut the doors on December 31, 1915, the company pivoted to bottling low-alcohol "near beer" and shifted limited production to Wisconsin, while local legend holds that Chicago bootleggers later put the idle plant to use during Prohibition's driest years.
