Dogs have earned that kind of loyalty before. In January 1925, twenty mushers and about 150 sled dogs relayed diphtheria antitoxin 674 miles across Alaska in five and a half days to save the town of Nome from an epidemic. Gunnar Kaasen’s dog Balto ran the final, most publicized 53-mile leg into Nome and became a household name - but musher Leonhard Seppala and his lead dog Togo covered the longest and most brutal stretch, 91 miles including a crossing of Norton Sound’s exposed ice in -85F wind chill, as part of a 261-mile run. “I never had a better dog than Togo,” Seppala said years later. Famous or not, every dog on that trail showed up when it mattered.
