The Hempstead building itself has a construction story worth remembering. Planning began in the fall of 1966, and a $6.7 million bond was approved the following spring to fund it. Ground broke in the fall of 1968 on forty acres along Pennsylvania Avenue, though weather delays and labor strikes pushed the timeline back before the school finally opened in the spring of 1970, with an official dedication ceremony held on October 25, 1970 for the $5.7 million facility. Hempstead built its own traditions quickly — the Mustangs became the first Dubuque high school to win a state team bowling title in 1979, and in 1993 the school pioneered the district's "summer clinic" concept to help students catch up academically, an idea that spread across Dubuque schools. The building itself kept evolving too: a $30 million renovation launched in May 2013 added over 141,000 square feet, including a new auditorium and updated science facilities, and by 2020 the school had opened a $9.5 million aquatic center with a full eight-lane competitive pool.
