The word "bouncer" has a genuinely surprising backstory. It first showed up in English back in 1762, built from the verb "bounce," which back then simply meant "to thump" or "to hit" — likely borrowed from the Dutch word bonzen or a Low German cousin, bunsen, both meaning "to beat." Over the next century the word drifted through several meanings: by 1833 a "bouncer" was slang for a boaster, a bully, or a braggart, and by 1842 it could just as easily describe something unusually large. The occupational meaning everyone knows today — someone who keeps order at a bar or club door — didn't lock in until around 1865 in American English. An 1879 newspaper account colorfully described one as a man who combined "the qualities of a brakeman and a bruiser," called on to handle "the dirty work of ejecting tramps," and by 1883 British writers were comparing the role to a "chucker out," tasked with stepping in whenever a party's "gaiety" tipped over into "wanton delirium."
