Founder Jack Thompson grew Oky Doky by buying up struggling neighborhood grocery stores in good locations and converting them into convenience stores, then later let independent operators run them as franchises for a cut of the gross receipts plus access to the Oky Doky name and buying power. That model helped the chain spread to a dozen stores across Dubuque and into East Dubuque, Galena, and Freeport, Illinois - reaching well beyond city limits under one shared name.
