Dubuque's own S.S. Kresge five-and-dime opened at 790 Main Street, showing up in city directories from as early as 1915 all the way through the 1980s, complete with the classic lunch counter that made variety stores a neighborhood hangout as much as a shop. The Detroit-based chain, founded in 1911 by Sebastian Spering Kresge, had grown into the third-largest variety store chain in the country by the early 1960s before eventually transforming into Kmart in 1977.
