Before Sundown Mountain ever existed, Dubuque skiers had to make do with far humbler setups. In the years before 1973, local alpine skiing fans relied on Bunker Hill Golf Course, where an unreliable, gasoline-powered portable tow rope sat near what's now the No. 11 hole. That makeshift arrangement was enough to inspire a real community: in March 1967, a group of Dubuquers — including Ed and Mickey Bernhard, Dave and Audrey Manson, Janet Reihle, Ernie Keller, John Frommelt, and more than a dozen others — held the first meeting of the Snomad Ski Club at Allison-Henderson Park, organizing weekend and day trips for members of all skill levels. The club kept adapting over the years, remodeling its basin trailer into an office and first-aid room in 1976 and swapping out aging propane heaters for electric ones. But by 1983, with Sundown Mountain and other alpine ski areas drawing skiers away, the club held its final run at the old basin, closing out a chapter of Dubuque's winter history.
