Stop and Sock was a real Dubuque driving range owned and run by Karl and Bernice Frommelt at the northeast corner of John Deere Road and Highways 52 & 3. It operated through the 1960s and stayed open for business well into the 1980s, even sponsoring a local softball team, as noted in a July 11, 1979 Telegraph-Herald article. Driving ranges like Stop and Sock became a fixture of postwar American recreation as golf boomed in the 1950s and 60s, giving weekend duffers a place to work on their swing without booking a full round.
