Schumacher Island Vintage T-Shirt
The Schumacher Island Vintage T-Shirt features a design found only at Dubuque Clothing Co., printed on a premium tee with soft, high-quality inks built to last -- a nod to the well-known river island most locals know as Chaplain Schmitt Island.
The island began as two separate spits of land in the Mississippi River, once known as "Ham Island" after early owner Mathias Ham. It was later renamed to honor Aloysius Schmitt, a Dubuque-area chaplain who died at Pearl Harbor, and went on to host a small airport starting in 1934 and later a city landfill until 1976. Today the island is home to the Q Casino and Dubuque Yacht Basin, along with a moving memorial to Schmitt built around a reflecting pond with a model of the battleship USS Oklahoma.
