The sign is made from reclaimed wood salvaged from old barns in Iowa, which gives it a rustic and authentic charm. The wood is then carefully cut and sanded to perfection.

"Visit Dubuque" became more than a slogan starting in 1966, when the city opened Iowa's first and, at the time, only tourist information center. For years the draw was mostly seasonal — fall foliage and a look at the historic Fourth Street Elevator — until riverboat tourism took off in the late 1980s. Attractions like the National Rivers Hall of Fame, the riverboat William M. Black, and events like Riverfest and DubuqueFest helped push annual visitors past one million by 1988, while tourism jobs in the area jumped from about 470 in 1984 to 2,400 just four years later.
